Installing Nvidia Driver in Ubuntu Secure Boot

*DISCLAIMER:- most of the images were taken from the internet. It is troublesome to simulate back the problem just to take original screenshot with the intention only to make a note.

  1. My laptop is Lenovo Y510P with Nvidia GeForce GT 755M using Ubuntu 20.04.

  2. After one of the updates, ubuntu failed to use Nvidia and instead it used Intel graphic.

  3. The Graphic status at Settings -> About is stating Intel Graphic.

  4. The X Server is also not working correctly. Eventhough I select NVIDIA, the Graphics column in About was still stating Intel graphics. Also, many items was not displayed. It displayed

    Instead of

  5. The nvidia-smi command prompt also produce the following error.

  6. There are two ways to solve this problem.

    1. Easier way - disable secure boot.
    2. Medium - Reinstall nvidia-prime, then ubuntu-drivers-common and run prime-select nvidia
    3. Hard hell - reinstall new driver

  7. No need to explain the secure boot. You just need to disable it in BIOS.

  8. I use the solution in here. There are many ways stated here but the one I use is at the Section 4 under UEFI System.

  9. Download the latest driver at Nvidia Official site. Please check whether your graphic card is supported in Supported Products tab after you are redirected to download page of the selected driver.

  10. After I was done with solution in the page I shared at point 8, I check at the About, X Server and nvidia-smi command, everything is good.

  12. X-Server

  13. nvidia-smi command
